Supporting the weight

once offered in submission
these anxious columns
a bridge to fertile land;
a cathedral of the heaviest foundation
encased in seven buttresses
that now buckle for me.

Engineered to perfection, these highways
carry all impulses in heartbeat delivery,
patrolling the inner perimeter
of what is your temple
to feed ecosystems beneath corridors I trace,
constructed of the smoothest asphalt
that levels to my touch;

Quarry swims cable quiverings
that shake cornerstones of masonry,
rotated as a mixing machine;
cementing closings on consenting deeds
whose anxieties birth butterflies
that flutter in the awnings

Of two pipelines folding, beams surrounding;
in this symmetry of scaffolding and still
we lock and survey to measure your horizon
parted gently at one side to reveal
two transoms ajar;
and I raise the ladder to enter into
your million worlds of water.
